The Northern Tanzania lodge Safari Circuit is the better known and
most-visited of the two, consisting of the area surrounding
the town of Arusha. The Northern Circuit’s main draw is the
massive Serengeti ecosystem, encompassing the Ngorongoro
Crater Highlands, which is one of the biggest remaining
animal migration routes in the world. Also on the northern
safari circuit are the lesser-known Tarangire, Arusha and
Lake Manyara National Parks.

In the morning drive to Ngorongoro Crater. After arrival you
will descend into the crater for a wonderful game drive
(with a picnic lunch) inside the Ngorongoro Crater often
described as one of the wonders of the world. It is the
world’s largest intact volcanic caldera and a a natural
sanctuary for some of Africa’s densest animal populations.
It is one of the few places where the rare black rhino can
be observed in their natural setting. As very few animals
migrate in and out of the crater with its 2000 ft. high
walls, you can expect to see lions, elephants, zebras,
hippos, flamingos, jackals, rhinos, antelopes, many birds
and other species. With a bit of luck the ‘Big Five’ can be
spotted during one game drive only.
Overnight at Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge. Lunchbox and dinner

Day 2: Ngorongoro - Serengeti
The Serengeti National Park,
like most of the other protected areas in the country,
slipped into a decline. Ivory poaching decimated the
elephant population until only a few hundred were left in
the park, and the thriving rhino population dwindled to just
two individuals. Park rangers went without bullets, boots,
uniforms and often salaries.
But by the mid 1980's, the economy of both the park and the
country improved. A massive infusion of donor money helped
park authorities to rebuild crucial park infrastructure and
reestablish the morale and effectiveness of the
anti-poaching units. The 1989 worldwide Ivory Ban further
eased the burden on the park's elephant population. Slowly
and surely, park authorities wrested control of the park
away from the poachers.
However, meat poaching continues. In an average year, local
people living around the park illegally kill about 40,000
animals, mainly wildebeest and zebra, but also giraffe,
buffalo and impala. Many other animals are caught in
poachers' snares or pit fall traps.
The killing is ultimately a manifestation of long-simmering
antagonism between the impoverished villagers around the
Serengeti's protected areas and the authorities of the
Serengeti National Park. The conflict, now recognized as the
source of most management, poaching and encroachment
problems did not exist two decades ago; there was land
enough for everyone and every animal. What we must face, all
of us - poachers, tourists, farmers, conservationists and
pastoralists - is the difficult truth that the land does not
go on forever. In an effort to harmonize the existence of
pastoralists with the wildlife in the Serengeti buffer zones
locally administered game reserves, Willdife Mangement
Areas, are now created in the peripheries of the park.
After breakfast you start on your way to Serengeti National
Park. A picnic lunch will be provided. On the way you will
stop at the Olduvai Gorge Museum with artefacts from Olduvai
Gorge where anthropologists Louis and Mary Leakey made many
significant discoveries, contributing to the theory that
human life originated in Africa. After stopping for your
picnic lunch on a kopje (rock outcropping) in Serengeti you
will continue further into the park and go on a game drive.
Overnight at Mapito Tented Camp. All meals included. The traditional tented camp is
by far the best choice to explore wildlife on a safari in
Africa. There is nothing to compare with being in a
luxurious camp in a beautiful setting with the sights and
sounds of nature close by. You might want to come to Africa
to see the wildlife and the beautiful African landscapes
while being close to the rhythm of nature, and the luxurious
tented camp provides the perfect way to do so!
Mapito Tented Camp provides its guests with the most
authentic Africa experience due to its colonial, old days
hunter’s camp ambience. Sitting snugly in a clearing
surrounded by Acacia trees its 13 spacious walk-in tents
create an intimate atmosphere for only 40 guests while
indulging them with the amenities of a big lodge, as all
tents are equipped with running water, flush toilets, hot
and cold water showers, electric lights and mosquito
nettings.
Personal attention and care is of high importance here in
Tanzania. The friendly staff will go to their extremes to
ensure that you have a wonderful, satisfying and memorable
stay. Everything is done at your leisure. You decide how you
want to spend your day at the camp and when to go for game
drives in the Serengeti. Throughout your stay you will be
serenaded by the resident wildlife.
Day 3: Serengeti

returning from hunting and lions awaking in the dawn A full
day of game drives around Serengeti. Depending on the time
of year and the migration of the herds you can expect to see

baboons, hippos, rhinos, antelopes and many birds and other
species.

Maasai ‘Bomas' , while the vibrantly coloured wall frescoes

Day 2: Serengeti
The Serengeti National Park, like most of the other
protected areas in the country, slipped into a decline.
Ivory poaching decimated the elephant population until only
a few hundred were left in the park, and the thriving rhino
population dwindled to just two individuals. Park rangers
went without bullets, boots, uniforms and often salaries.
But by the mid 1980's, the economy of both the park and the
country improved. A massive infusion of donor money helped
park authorities to rebuild crucial park infrastructure and
reestablish the morale and effectiveness of the
anti-poaching units. The 1989 worldwide Ivory Ban further
eased the burden on the park's elephant population. Slowly
and surely, park authorities wrested control of the park
away from the poachers.
However, meat poaching continues. In an average year, local
people living around the park illegally kill about 40,000
animals, mainly wildebeest and zebra, but also giraffe,
buffalo and impala. Many other animals are caught in
poachers' snares or pit fall traps.
The killing is ultimately a manifestation of long-simmering
antagonism between the impoverished villagers around the
Serengeti's protected areas and the authorities of the
Serengeti National Park. The conflict, now recognized as the
source of most management, poaching and encroachment
problems did not exist two decades ago; there was land
enough for everyone and every animal. What we must face, all
of us - poachers, tourists, farmers, conservationists and
pastoralists - is the difficult truth that the land does not
go on forever. In an effort to harmonize the existence of
pastoralists with the wildlife in the Serengeti buffer zones
locally administered game reserves, Willdife Mangement
Areas, are now created in the peripheries of the park.
Depart after breakfast to Serengeti passing through Olduvai
Gorge the site for Leakey’s family discoveries of fossils of
human and animal ancestors dating back to almost two million
years. Meals and overnight at Mapito tented camp.

the richest grazing grounds in Africa. The most famous is
without question the Ngorongoro Crater, the worlds largest
intact volcanic caldera; home to the highest density of big
game in Africa. With 600 metre high walls and a rich
volcanic floor that plays host to the big five, Ngorongoro
is one of the continent's most famous safari destinations. A
trip to Northern Tanzania has to include Ngorongoro, it is
an exceptional place to interact with the Maasai and is one
of the most beautiful natural wildlife sites in the world.
Day 5: Tarangire
Your Tour continues with the drive to Tarangire, Tanzania's
third largest national park and sanctuary for an unusually
large elephant population. Majestic baobab trees are an

7 DAYS LAKE MANYARA / SERENGETI
/ NGORONGORO / TARANGIRE
Day 1: Lake Manyara
Lake Manyara is a lovely scenic park on the road from Arusha
to the Ngorongoro Crater. The lake itself takes up much of
the park leaving a strip of land running down its shores
where game concentrates. Famous for its tree climbing lions,
good elephants and baboons, Manyara is often visited for an
afternoon's game drive on the way to Ngorongoro. The only
negative of safari here is how busy it can be, but spend
longer, move deeper into the park, and you can avoid the
crowds. Overall a great introduction to safari, but a park
that is not a patch on its neighbours
Leave Arusha arriving by lunch time, proceed to Lake Manyara
national park for afternoon game drive. Dinner and overnight

Tarangire National Park is a lovely quiet park in Northern
Tanzania that is most famous for its elephant migration,
birding and quiet authentic safari atmosphere. The majority
of travellers to the region either miss out Tarangire
altogether or venture into the park for a matter of hours
leaving parts of Tarangire virtually untouched. With a game
viewing area that is roughly ten times the size of nearby
Manyara and a concentration of game that is exceptional from
July through to October, this seasonal park is a little gem
on the Northern safari circuit.
After breakfast drive to Tarangire. Afternoon game drive.
Dinner and overnight at Tarangire Safari Lodge.
Built on top of a high bluff
with a breathtaking panorama, our lodge is superbly located
in Tarangire National Park, providing one of the best views
in Africa.
Carving out the landscape below the lodge is Tarangire
River, a favourite watering place, which attracts impressive
numbers and variety of game. The scene unfolds before you
while lounging on the outdoor patio, allowing you to
appreciate Tarangire's diverse wildlife without ever leaving
the lodge.
At the heart of the lodge are the impressively high thatched
roofs of the lounge and dining room. The open-sided design
allows an uninterrupted view of the landscape and wildlife
below, and captures the cooling breeze while you dine on our
delicious home cooked safari cuisine.
The lounge area has oversized armchairs made from old
Zanzibari dhow boats, which make a perfect place to relax in
the evenings. Those wanting something a bit more active can
take a dip in the pool, a bird walk around the lodge grounds
or hunt for souvenirs in the Baobab boutique.
Our luxury twin tents combine the authentic safari
atmosphere of ‘nights under canvas’, with more modern
comforts of electric light and en suite bathrooms with hot
water. We also have bungalows that provide the space and
convenience of solid walls yet blend into their surroundings
by using local stone and echoing the traditional round
Maasai huts.
