The Mangapwani Slave
Chamber is a few kilometres further up the coast from the
Coral Cave. Although sometimes called the Slave Cave, it is
a square-shaped cell that has been cut out of the coralline
rock, with a roof on top. It was originally built for
storing slaves, and its construction is attributed to one
Mohammed bin Nassor Al-Alwi, an important slave trader.
Boats from the mainland would unload their human cargo on
the nearby beach, and the slaves would be kept here before
being taken to Zanzibar Town for resale, or to plantations
on the island. It is thought that some time after 1873, when
Sultan Barghash signed the Anglo–Zanzibari treaty which
officially abolished the slave trade, the cave was used as a
place to hide slaves, as an illicit trade continued for many
years.
Prison Island is just off the
coast of Stone Town and it’s a quick 10 minute boat trip
from the old town’s waterfront. Just negotiate a ride with
any of the waiting boats.
This half day guided tour begins and ends at your hotel. A
30 minute boat ride (motorized) will take you to this
exclusive island. The Island was formerly owned by an Arab
and was privately used as a place of detention for
recalcitrant slaves. In later stages, General Mathews bought
it and the Gaul, which still stands, was built in 1893, as a
central prison for Zanzibar, hence the name PRISON ISLAND.
It was however, never utilized as such. Whilst on the
Island, you will be able to see the GIANT TORTOISE and have
a delightful swim or snorkel. Return to your hotel.
It’s fringed with a lovely white sand beach and a small
coral reef, making it ideal for a spot of snorkelling and
sunbathing. You can hire masks and fins once you’ve landed.
The island, also known as Changuu, was first used by Arab
slave merchants to detain unruly slaves, before the British
built what was intended as a prison for Stone Town in 1890.
The building was never used as a prison, though later it did
become a quarantine station for Zanzibar, Kenya, Uganda and
what was then Tanganyika.
Today Prison Island is known for its excellent views of
Stone Town and for its giant tortoises imported from Aldabra
in the Seychelles in the late 19th century. They stand up to
a rather staggeringly one metre high, could feasibly be
hundreds of years old, and are frequently seen copulating!
The leaves of the neem tree
were once used as a cure for malaria and indigestion, the
iodine tree produces a deep red sap used to fight infection,
while the foaming berries of the unimaginatively named soap
berry tree were used for centuries as an alternative to
soap.
Over the centuries, Zanzibar’s cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon,
pepper and many other spices brought the sultans of Oman
across the Indian Ocean by dhow on the seasonal trade winds.
Most tours are by dala-dala (pick-up trucks converted into
buses) and include yummy lunches of seafood or Zanzibar
curry, coconut milk, and plenty of fresh fruit. The exotic
spices and fruits are grown in the plantations just outside
of Stone
