Tour Overview
This 1 day Stone Town tour takes you through one of East Africa's most historically layered cities. Stone Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the old heart of Zanzibar — a compact maze of narrow alleys, ornate carved doors, Arab merchant houses, mosques and colonial buildings that tell the story of centuries of Indian Ocean trade.
The tour covers the key sites — the Old Fort, the House of Wonders, the slave chambers at the Anglican Cathedral, the spice market, Freddie Mercury's birthplace and the Forodhani waterfront gardens. A professional local guide walks with you throughout, explaining the history and culture behind what you are seeing.
Hotel pickup and drop-off are included. The tour works well as a standalone day out or as part of a wider Tanzania safari or beach holiday.
Best Time to Visit
Stone Town can be visited year-round. Morning is the best time to start — it is cooler, the markets are at their busiest and the light is better for photography in the alleys. The tour is designed to keep you in shaded areas and covered markets during the hottest part of the day. Avoid Friday midday if possible, when the main mosque areas are busiest for prayers.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Stone Town Full Day Guided Tour
Pickup from your hotel and drive to the spice market to start the morning. Your guide introduces you to the cloves, cardamom, cinnamon, black pepper and other spices that made Zanzibar one of the most important trading posts in the Indian Ocean world. From there, enter the Darajani Bazaar — Stone Town's main covered market, full of colour, noise and everyday life.
The walking tour then takes you into the heart of the old town. Visit the Old Fort — the oldest surviving building in Zanzibar, built by Omani Arabs in the early 1700s — and the House of Wonders, the first building in East Africa to have electricity and a lift. Walk the surrounding waterfront and take in the carved wooden doors that Stone Town is famous for, each one telling something about the family that once lived behind it.
Continue to the Anglican Cathedral and slave chambers. The cathedral was built on the site of the last open slave market in East Africa, and the underground holding chambers where enslaved people were kept before sale are still intact. Your guide explains this history carefully and in context. It is a difficult but important part of understanding Zanzibar.
After lunch at a local restaurant (own cost), walk through the alleys to Freddie Mercury's birthplace — the Mercury House on Kenyatta Road, where the Queen frontman was born in 1946 as Farrokh Bulsara. The afternoon finishes at the Forodhani Gardens on the waterfront — a good place to sit, watch the dhows go by and pick up street food before your driver takes you back to your hotel.
