Safari Overview

This 8 Days Mara, Nakuru, Naivasha, Amboseli & Tsavo East Safari is one of the most comprehensive circuits you can do from Nairobi. It takes you through five very different parks — the wide open grasslands of the Maasai Mara, the flamingo-lined shores of Lake Nakuru, the hippo-filled waters of Lake Naivasha, the elephant plains of Amboseli with Kilimanjaro on the horizon, and the vast red-dust wilderness of Tsavo East. No two days look the same.

The nights are structured to give you the right amount of time at each destination — 2 nights in the Mara for a full day of game drives, 1 night at Nakuru for the flamingos and rhinos, 1 night at Naivasha for the boat safari, 2 nights in Amboseli for a dedicated full day under Kilimanjaro, and 1 night in Tsavo East before driving back to Nairobi. It is a well-paced circuit that covers a lot of ground without feeling rushed.

All transport is by 4×4 safari vehicle with a professional guide throughout. Accommodation is in comfortable lodges or tented camps at each location, all on full board.

Full Day in the Maasai Mara Two nights in the Mara means a complete day for game drives — the best way to experience Africa's most famous reserve
Elephants Under Kilimanjaro — Amboseli Amboseli's elephant herds against the backdrop of Africa's highest mountain — one of Kenya's most iconic sights
Lake Nakuru Rhinos & Flamingos Lake Nakuru is a dedicated rhino sanctuary and one of East Africa's best birding spots, famous for its vast flamingo flocks
Tsavo East — Kenya's Largest Park Finish the circuit in Tsavo East, known for its red dust elephants, Galana River wildlife and wide untouched wilderness

Best Time to Visit

July to October is peak season for the Maasai Mara. The wildebeest migration passes through during this period and wildlife viewing across all parks is excellent. Book accommodation early — this is the busiest time of year.

January to March is a great alternative — dry, warm and quieter than peak season. Amboseli's Kilimanjaro views are often clearest in the morning during this window.

April to June is the long rainy season. Parks are green and beautiful, wildlife is present and rates are lower. Some roads can get muddy but the 4×4 handles it well.

November to December brings short rains. A quieter time to visit with good birdlife and lush scenery. Tsavo East in particular is striking after the rains.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1

Nairobi to Maasai Mara — Afternoon Game Drive

5–6 Hour Drive Great Rift Valley Afternoon Game Drive

Depart Nairobi early and drive west towards the Maasai Mara National Reserve, stopping at the Great Rift Valley viewpoint along the way. The drive takes around 5 to 6 hours. Arrive in time for lunch, check in and head straight out for an afternoon game drive across the open grasslands. Elephant, zebra, giraffe, wildebeest and buffalo are all common on the first drive — and with a bit of luck, lion too.

Day 2

Full Day Game Drive — Maasai Mara

Full Day Safari Big Five Picnic Lunch

An early start and a full day in the Mara — morning and afternoon game drives with a picnic lunch inside the reserve. This is your best chance for predator sightings — lion, leopard and cheetah are all present in the Mara and your guide will work the areas where recent sightings have been reported. During the migration season (July–October) the Mara River crossings can be one of the most dramatic wildlife spectacles on earth. An optional hot air balloon ride can be arranged as an early morning extra.

Overnight: Lodge / Tented Camp, Maasai Mara · Full Board
Day 3

Maasai Mara to Lake Nakuru National Park

Morning Game Drive 3–4 Hour Drive Lake Nakuru Game Drive

An early morning game drive in the Maasai Mara (optional) before checking out and driving north to Lake Nakuru National Park. Nakuru is a dedicated rhino sanctuary and home to both black and white rhino — one of the best places in Kenya to see them. The lake itself attracts huge flocks of flamingos along with pelicans, cormorants and fish eagles. Arrive in time for an afternoon game drive around the lake circuit, keeping an eye out for rhino, lion, leopard, waterbuck and Rothschild's giraffe.

Overnight: Lodge / Camp, Lake Nakuru · Full Board
Day 4

Lake Nakuru to Lake Naivasha — Boat Safari

Morning Game Drive Lake Naivasha Boat Safari

A final morning game drive in Nakuru (optional), then drive to Lake Naivasha — a beautiful freshwater lake in the Rift Valley, fringed with yellow fever trees and papyrus. In the afternoon, board a boat for a lake safari among the hippos, watching African fish eagles, herons and kingfishers from the water. An optional walk on Crescent Island lets you get out of the vehicle and walk alongside zebra, giraffe and wildebeest on foot — a completely different experience to a standard game drive.

Day 5

Lake Naivasha to Amboseli National Park

4–5 Hour Drive Amboseli Afternoon Game Drive

Drive south through Nairobi and on towards the Tanzania border, arriving at Amboseli National Park in the early afternoon. Amboseli sits at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro and is famous for its large elephant herds that move freely across the open swamp and plains. Check in at your lodge and head out for an afternoon game drive — if the sky is clear, the sight of elephants with the snow-capped peak behind them is unforgettable.

Overnight: Lodge / Tented Camp, Amboseli · Full Board
Day 6

Full Day Game Drive — Amboseli

Full Day Safari Kilimanjaro Views Elephant Herds

A full day in Amboseli with morning and afternoon game drives. Mornings are the best time for Kilimanjaro views — the mountain is often cloud-free before mid-morning, giving you that classic shot of elephants at the base of Africa's highest peak. The swamp areas attract huge concentrations of elephants, buffalo, hippos and waterbirds. Lion, cheetah and hyena are also present. An afternoon drive across the open plains rounds off the day before a final sunset from the lodge.

Day 7

Amboseli to Tsavo East National Park

2–3 Hour Drive Tsavo East Afternoon Game Drive

Drive east into Tsavo East National Park — Kenya's largest park and one of the least visited, which gives it a wild and unhurried feel. Tsavo is famous for its red dust elephants, which roll in the area's distinctive red volcanic soil, and for the Galana River that cuts through the park and concentrates wildlife along its banks. Check in at your lodge and spend the afternoon on a game drive along the river — crocodiles, hippos, elephants and buffalo are all commonly seen here.
