Safari Overview
This 10 days Kenya and Tanzania Family Adventure Safari is designed for families who want to experience some of East Africa's best wildlife without making the trip feel rushed. The journey takes you from Amboseli in Kenya to the wide plains of the Serengeti, the wildlife-rich Ngorongoro Crater, the town of Arusha and finally the beaches of Zanzibar.
The safari is planned around the needs of families with children. Game drives can be adjusted according to the children's ages and energy levels, with regular breaks and a relaxed pace where possible. You will also have opportunities for nature walks, Maasai storytelling and simple wildlife activities that help children learn while having fun.
Amboseli National Park is the perfect place to start. The park is famous for its large elephant herds and beautiful views of Mount Kilimanjaro. The open plains make it easy for families to enjoy wildlife viewing, while the mountain provides an unforgettable background for photographs.
In Tanzania, the Serengeti gives you more time for wildlife viewing across its huge grasslands. You can look for lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, giraffe, zebra and wildebeest. The Ngorongoro Crater then offers another excellent wildlife experience in a much smaller area, making it easier to see a wide variety of animals during one game drive.
After the safari, you spend time in Arusha before flying to Zanzibar. The final part of the trip is about slowing down, enjoying the beach and giving the family time to relax after the excitement of the safari. A Zanzibar beach club finale gives the children and parents a fun and easy finish to the adventure.
Best Time to Visit
June to October is one of the best periods for this family safari. The weather is generally dry, making game drives easier and wildlife easier to spot. This is also a good time to combine a safari with a Zanzibar beach stay.
December to February is another good period. The weather is generally warm and the parks are good for wildlife viewing. This period can also be excellent for families travelling during school holidays.
March to May brings the long rains. The parks become very green and there are fewer visitors, but some roads can be muddy. Zanzibar remains a good beach destination, although weather can be less predictable.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Nairobi to Amboseli National Park
Meet your safari guide in Nairobi in the morning and drive south towards Amboseli National Park. The journey takes around 4 to 5 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. As you get closer to Amboseli, the scenery changes to open plains with views of Mount Kilimanjaro on clear days.
Arrive at your family-friendly lodge or camp for lunch and some time to settle in. Later in the afternoon, head out for your first game drive. Amboseli is famous for its large elephant herds, and the open landscape makes wildlife easy and enjoyable for children to watch. Your guide will keep the drive relaxed and age-appropriate.
Full Day Family Safari — Amboseli
Start the day with a relaxed morning game drive in Amboseli. The cooler morning hours are a good time to look for wildlife, and your guide will choose areas that work well for the family. Look for elephants, zebra, giraffe, buffalo, wildebeest, antelope and lions as you explore the park.
Return to the lodge for lunch and some downtime. Children can enjoy a family-friendly nature activity or simply relax by the lodge before the afternoon. Later, head out again for another short game drive and enjoy the changing light over the Amboseli plains. On clear evenings, Mount Kilimanjaro can provide an unforgettable backdrop.
Amboseli to Serengeti National Park
After breakfast, leave Amboseli and continue into Tanzania towards the Serengeti National Park. Depending on the final routing and flight schedule, the family will travel by road and/or scheduled safari flight. Your safari team will handle the border and transfer arrangements so you can concentrate on enjoying the journey.
Arrive in the Serengeti and settle into your family-friendly lodge or tented camp. If time allows, enjoy a short afternoon game drive around the area near your camp. The Serengeti is much larger and more open than Amboseli, with huge grasslands that support large numbers of wildlife.
Full Day Family Safari — Serengeti
Enjoy a full day exploring the Serengeti. Start with a morning game drive when wildlife is active and the temperatures are cooler. Your guide will look for lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, giraffe, zebra and wildebeest, while explaining the animals in a way that is easy for children to understand.
Return to the lodge for lunch and a rest, or have a picnic lunch depending on the family's preference. Continue with an afternoon game drive and spend time watching wildlife rather than rushing from one sighting to another. This is a good day for children to use their junior ranger activity booklets and record the animals they see.
Full Day Family Safari — Serengeti
Another full day in the Serengeti gives you more time to explore different areas of the park. This extra day is useful for families because there is no need to rush through every sighting. Your guide can follow recent animal activity and choose the best areas for the day.
Look for lion, leopard and cheetah, as well as elephants, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and many smaller animals. Depending on the season and location, you may also see large herds moving across the plains. In the evening, return to camp for dinner and a relaxed family evening.
Serengeti to Ngorongoro Conservation Area
Enjoy a final morning game drive in the Serengeti (optional) before leaving the park. This gives the family one more chance to see wildlife before heading towards the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The journey takes you through changing landscapes and gives you a chance to see how the scenery changes as you approach the crater highlands.
Arrive at your family-friendly lodge or camp near Ngorongoro and have time to rest. Depending on arrival time, you can enjoy the lodge surroundings or a simple family nature activity. The cooler highland air is a nice change after the warmer Serengeti plains.
Ngorongoro Crater to Arusha
Start early and descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for a family game drive. The crater is one of the best places in Tanzania to see a large variety of animals in one area. Look for lion, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, hippo and, with some luck, rhino.
After the crater experience, continue towards Arusha. The drive gives everyone a chance to relax after the game drive. Arrive in Arusha and check into your family-friendly hotel. Spend the evening at leisure and enjoy a quieter night before the final part of the journey to Zanzibar.
Arusha to Zanzibar
Enjoy breakfast in Arusha before your transfer to the airport for your flight to Zanzibar. The flight gives the family a much easier transition from the safari to the beach and avoids a long road journey.
On arrival in Zanzibar, meet your driver and transfer to your family-friendly beach hotel. The rest of the day is free to relax by the pool, walk along the beach or simply enjoy some quiet family time. After several days of safari, this is a chance to slow down and enjoy the island.
Zanzibar Family Beach Day
Enjoy a full day by the Indian Ocean. After breakfast, the family can spend the morning swimming, playing on the beach or enjoying activities available at the resort. The day is intentionally relaxed after the busy safari days.
Later, enjoy the Zanzibar beach club finale. Families can relax by the water, enjoy refreshments and spend time together before the final evening of the trip. Optional activities such as a family-friendly boat trip, cultural visit or other island experiences can be arranged depending on the family's interests.
Zanzibar — Departure
Enjoy a final breakfast at the beach resort and, depending on your flight time, have a relaxed morning by the ocean. There is no need to rush the final day, and the family can enjoy the resort before checking out.
Your driver will transfer you to Abeid Amani Karume International Airport in time for your flight home. Your safari and beach adventure ends with memories of elephants in Amboseli, the Serengeti plains, Ngorongoro wildlife and the beaches of Zanzibar.
