Safari Overview

The Maasai Mara National Reserve is Kenya's most celebrated wildlife destination — and for good reason. Spanning 1,510 km² of open savannah, it shelters one of the densest concentrations of predators on earth, alongside Africa's iconic Big Five: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino.

This 5 Days Lake Nakuru & Maasai Mara Classic Safari is designed to give you the very best of the Mara — from the electric atmosphere of a Mara River crossing to the golden silence of an early-morning game drive when the lions are still active. You'll also visit Lake Nakuru, a Rift Valley soda lake famous for its flamingos and one of Kenya's last strongholds for both black and white rhino.

Your private certified guide travels with you throughout, sharing two decades of bush knowledge — from reading animal tracks to positioning the vehicle for the perfect sighting. Accommodation ranges from authentic tented camps that put you at the heart of the wilderness to comfortable lodges with views across the plains.

Morning & Evening Game Drives Daily drives timed to peak predator activity at dawn and dusk
Big Five All in One Reserve Lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo & rhino in a single ecosystem
Maasai Village Visit An authentic cultural experience with a local Maasai community
Lake Nakuru Flamingos Thousands of flamingos turning the lakeshore pink

Best Time to Visit

July to October is the best time to visit the Maasai Mara. This is when the Great Migration is active and wildebeest river crossings are most likely. The weather is dry and wildlife is easy to find.

January to March is also excellent — the Mara has good predator activity, newborn animals attract big cats and there are fewer visitors than peak season. Prices are lower too.

April to June is the long rainy season. Game drives are still possible and wildlife is abundant but some roads can get muddy. This is the lowest price period.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1

Nairobi → Maasai Mara

Road Transfer (5–6 hrs) Afternoon Game Drive Dinner & Overnight: Mara

Your adventure begins with an early morning pickup from your Nairobi hotel. Your guide will collect you in a customised 4×4 Land Cruiser — roof hatch open, binoculars at the ready — for the scenic 5–6 hour drive southwest through the Great Rift Valley escarpment.

Stop at a viewpoint overlooking the dramatic valley floor before continuing through Narok town and into the Mara ecosystem. Arrive at camp in time for lunch, a brief rest, and then your very first afternoon game drive.

The Mara never disappoints on day one. Lions are often found resting under flat-topped acacia trees in the afternoon heat, while elephants and buffalo make their way to the river as the light turns golden. Return to camp for a campfire dinner under a sky full of stars.

Day 2

Full Day in Maasai Mara — Big Five Tracking

Morning Game Drive Bush Lunch Evening Game Drive

Wake before sunrise. There is nothing quite like the Mara at first light — the air cool and still, the grass glowing amber, and the plains alive with movement. Set out at 6:00 AM for the morning game drive when predators are at their most active.

Your guide will navigate the vast reserve, reading the landscape for clues: a cluster of vultures, an impala alarm call, the flick of a tail in tall grass. Cheetah, leopard, and lion are regularly spotted in the Mara's open terrain — ideal for the long sightlines that make photography here world-class.

Return to camp for a hot breakfast, then head out again midday for a bush picnic lunch on the plains — one of the most memorable meals you'll ever have. The evening drive takes advantage of the soft golden light as herds of zebra and wildebeest move across the horizon.

Day 3

Mara River Crossing & Maasai Village

River Crossing Watch Maasai Village Visit Sundowner Drive

Today focuses on the Mara River — the stage for one of nature's greatest spectacles. Between July and October, hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and zebra gather on the riverbank, working up the nerve to cross into crocodile-infested waters. Your guide knows the best vantage points and will position you perfectly.

Even outside migration season, the Mara River is exceptional — hippos wallow in pools, Nile crocodiles bask on sandbanks, and kingfishers dart between branches. Elephant herds frequently cross here, providing spectacular photographic opportunities.

In the afternoon, visit a traditional Maasai village (manyatta). Meet the community elders, learn about the Maasai's semi-nomadic way of life, witness the famous jumping dance, and browse handcrafted jewellery and beadwork made by the women of the village. End the day with a sundowner drive as the Mara turns to fire at sunset.

Day 4

Maasai Mara → Lake Nakuru

Morning Drive Transfer to Nakuru Afternoon Nakuru Drive

One final morning game drive in the Mara (optional) before breakfast — a last chance to find that elusive leopard in a fig tree or catch a pride of lions with their cubs. After breakfast and check-out, drive north through the Rift Valley to Lake Nakuru National Park.

Lake Nakuru is a shallow soda lake whose alkaline waters support vast blooms of blue-green algae — the primary food source for up to a million flamingos that can turn the entire shoreline pink. The park is also a critically important black and white rhino sanctuary, fenced to protect Kenya's small but growing rhino population.

Afternoon game drive in Nakuru. Waterbuck, baboons, and Cape buffalo are abundant, while the lake viewpoint from the escarpment offers one of Kenya's most photographed panoramas.

Day 5

Lake Nakuru → Nairobi & Departure

Morning Drive Return to Nairobi Airport / Hotel Drop-off

A final early morning game drive in Lake Nakuru (optional) — the low light on the flamingos at dawn is unforgettable. After breakfast and check-out, drive back to Nairobi (approximately 2.5 hours), arriving in time for lunch and onward travel.

Your guide will drop you at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), your Nairobi hotel, or any other agreed drop-off point. If your flight departs late in the day, we can arrange a visit to the Nairobi Giraffe Centre or the Karen Blixen Museum en route — just let us know when booking.

Optional Nairobi Experiences Before Your Flight

If your flight is later in the evening, we can arrange one or more optional Nairobi activities before taking you to the airport. Choose from the Giraffe Centre, Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, Karen Blixen Museum or lunch at the famous Carnivore Restaurant. The exact activities depend on your flight time and the day's traffic.

  • ✓ City Tour — explore Nairobi's highlights
  • ✓ Giraffe Centre — see and feed Rothschild's giraffes
  • ✓ Sheldrick Wildlife Trust — visit the elephant rescue and rehabilitation centre
  • ✓ Karen Blixen Museum — visit the former home of the author of Out of Africa
  • ✓ Carnivore Restaurant — enjoy lunch before heading to the airport

After your chosen Nairobi activity or lunch, continue to the airport for your departure flight. We recommend allowing enough time for traffic and airport check-in, especially for international flights.

The best time is July to October — peak Great Migration season when over 1.5 million wildebeest and zebra cross the Mara River. However, the Mara offers outstanding game viewing year-round. January to March is excellent for big cats and newborn animals; April to June brings lush green landscapes and fewer crowds with lower prices.

The price covers all accommodation, all meals, park fees, game drives, expert guide, transfers, and the Maasai village visit. See the full included/excluded list above. International flights, visas, travel insurance, and gratuities are not included.

We offer two options: a scenic road transfer (5–6 hours) through the Great Rift Valley escarpment — the drive itself is beautiful — or a 45-minute bush flight from Wilson Airport to the Mara airstrips (available at an additional cost). Many guests drive in and fly back, or vice versa.

We recommend neutral-coloured clothing (khaki, olive, beige — avoid bright colours and white), a light fleece or jacket for early morning drives, sunscreen, insect repellent, a wide-brimmed hat, good walking shoes, and a camera with a zoom lens. A full packing list is sent with your booking confirmation. Bags on bush flights are limited to 15kg soft-sided bags.

Most nationalities require a Kenya Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA), which is applied for online before travel at etakenya.go.ke. The eTA costs approximately $32 USD and is typically approved within 72 hours. We guide all our clients through the process upon booking.
